”Beautiful bridge there, a great one of a kind design especially made for the citizens of Cochise County and all travelers to enjoy. Really looks great! “

Bob Hermann, photographer and area resident.

The I-10/SR 90 Traffic Interchange is considered the “Gateway to the San Pedro River Valley”. The San Pedro River is a meso-riparian corridor providing critical stop over habitat for millions of migrating birds. It is one of only two major rivers that flow north out of Mexico into the United States and is one of the last large undammed rivers in the Southwest.

Unique Features:

With input from the various project stakeholders; the Arizona Department of Transportation, Friends of the San Pedro River and surrounding community members, the architectural enhancements reflect the history of Benson and the flora and fauna of the San Pedro River. Custom concrete relief designs depicting cottonwood trees and flowing water were designed for the bridge abutment walls and piers. Decorative metal at work reminiscent of Blue Grama, a native grass, was placed on the wing walls. Collaborating with a local photographer, Bob Herrmann, images of the indigenous flora and fauna were selected for photographic tileography. Fabricated by Tile Artisans, the photographic tiles are seen on the retaining walls.

Responsibilities:

Architectural Enhancement Concept & Design Development, Construction Documentation and Construction Administration for the Project’s entire scope of work. With Wheat Scharf Associates.
