Interstate 10 Widening: Prince Road to 29th Street project included the design of architectural treatments for 3 new bridge structures; concrete formliner work, tile, metal and paint on retaining walls, abutments and bridge decks. The scope of work also included incorporating terraced walls at the mainline/frontage road interchanges, landscape, irrigation design, and stormwater pollution prevention plans. An important aspect of this project was the coordination with local neighborhoods, other design groups and agencies.

 

Unique Features:

The unifying theme of the Sonoran Desert environment and the Santa Cruz River is depicted at the I-10/Speedway Bridge, as well as an acknowledgement of the astronomy industry in the Southwest. On March 15th, 1960, the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, located on Kitt peak was dedicated. (Depicted by tile work located on retaining walls).

 

The 10-foot diameter steel sculptures represent the Milky Way Galaxy and are back-lit with LED’s providing a night time presence.

 

Responsibilities:

Architectural Enhancement Concept & Design Development, Construction Documentation and Construction Administration for the Project’s entire scope of work. With Wheat Scharf Associates.
