The Interstate 10 - Ruthrauff Road to Prince Rd. road widening project, located northwest of Tucson and travels through historic farming communities. The scope of work included; design and construction documentation of architectural treatments for retaining walls, bridge barriers and piers, pedestrian fences, planting design with passive water harvesting elements including basins, swales and check dams.
Unique Features:
Through multiple public outreach meetings for the architectural enhancement design concepts, the theme of ”Tucson - The Land and Its People” was the architectural treatments for the retaining walls, bridge barriers and pedestrian fences reflect the historic agricultural fields as well as the surrounding ’Sky Island’ topography. Public art elements reflect the Pascua Yaqui, Tohono O’odam and Hispanic cultures. As requested by the City of Tucson in an effort to reduce maintenance costs, passive water harvesting methodologies including basins, swales and check dams were included in the project plans for all planting areas, a first for the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Responsibilities:
Project Manager, Architectural Enhancement Concept & Design Development, Construction Documentation and Construction Administration for the Project’s entire scope of work. With Wheat Scharf Associates.
